Eating Out
Watch for the
fish lottery.
There is a joy to that hour of wandering the quay looking for a place to dine. But there is also a certain unease as you pass hopeful faces. Sometimes it's good to have a destination. I've eaten EVERYWHERE in Kastellorizo, and have definite favorites. The Horafia has a tiny little restaurant which serves the best of the Greek kitchen. Choices at the Ta Platania are limited each day, but every choice is wonderful. Their Keftardis are perfect. My best meals, every year, have been here. It's only downside is that it is away from the quay and so lacks the energy found there. (And that can also be the best upside.)
Along the quay, look to the ends. The very best value and some of best simple cooking is at Tis Ipomonis, known by most as the "Pitaman's". Crowded, the staff moves like a blur, and you could happily eat half your meals there. In fact, you SHOULD eat half your meals here - they are that nice. Fish, pitas, and grilled meats - this is a grill master at work - are the menu. At the other end of the quay, Tassia's kitchen at the Akrothalassi is a quieter haven for delightful meals from a full kitchen - more of the traditional traverna fare.
A great breakfast choice is the Radio Cafe on the quay - best selection of coffees.
Worth a stop is Zacharo, the old sweet shop. The cakes are fine, the ouzo at sunset the best price on the island.
A nice place for a late drink is Stratos Cafe near the old market.
The BIG news on the meals front is that the old Orea Megisti, run wonderfully for so many years by Savvas Mavrothalassitis, (and then run down for a few years under new management) is about to reopen as the Olive Garden. Damien ( Savvas's son) and Damien's wife, Monika, will be your hosts (they of Caretta). This summer will add a must stop to the dining rotation.
There are inviting venues in between, many with excellent water views, but higher prices or less crafted meals suggest you keep walking.
